Asbestos
Asbestos is a
mineral fiber, it was added to a variety of products to strengthen
them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Until the
1970s, many types of building products and insulation materials used
in homes contained asbestos. Most products made today do not contain
asbestos.
If you think
asbestos may be in a home, don't panic! Usually the best thing is to
LEAVE asbestos material that is in good condition ALONE.
Generally,
material in good condition will not release asbestos fibers. THERE
IS NO DANGER unless fibers are released and inhaled into the lungs
Asbestos
professionals can conduct home inspections, take samples of
suspected material, assess its condition, and advise about what
corrections are needed and who is qualified to make these
corrections.
The above are excerpts from: the American Lung Association, the U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency.
